REON is a newly founded independent space focused on clay, and slowly unfolding. Located in the mountainous village Porta, on the island of Corfu, REON wishes to offer an inclusive, open-ended working environment. REON’s residency is suitable for self-sufficient individuals looking for time and space, and find somehow meaningful the condition to exist within the reality of the rural greek landscape for a while. We are keen to welcome professionals such as artists, researchers, designers, architects and other practitioners, working with different facets of clay. Recently graduated individuals are also welcome to apply. Established in 2022, REON’s artist residency programme is one of the few non-profit AiR programs in the greek periphery.

Artist Residency
The residents are expected to develop (start or complete) a project or research, new or existing, according to their own natural rhythms, spending time on location. The invited residents will have the opportunity to work in a quiet environment with plently of natural light. Given the location, this is not a ‘social’ residency, however REON will be at your disposal to help you create any necessary connections for your project, discuss the process and offer guidance and support if/when needed.
It is important that you would like to share part of your work and experience with the local community. This could be for example a sculpting workshop for children, a collective dinner with the locals, a workshop on a special technique, a presentation at the end of your residency etc. We would be more than happy to talk about your own particular ideas.
A part of the work should be left for REON’s archive, agreed after mutual discussion and depending on the type of the residency.

Following up 4 invigorating summers of childrens’ community clay wokshops, this year we are broadening our scope, wishing to create a fresh and intimate experience of contemporary art for the local children with the help of a dedicated professional who will bring their own methods and expertise in Porta village or even develop new ones.
Art Educator Residency
During a concise period of 10-15 days you will develop a project, for the local children and young teenagers aged 6-13, which will include 5-8 meetings.
Ideally, the children will get to feel comfortable with sharing their ideas, comfortable with ambiguity, mistakes and experimentation. They will develop their confidence and courage.
As an invited artist/arts educator, you will have the opportunity to discover (un)learning skills in a new territory. The studio, filled with natural light will be available for your personal work and reflection as well. Even in high summer season, residents have the opportunity to exist in privacy and grow their sensitivity to the local context and natural landscape.

Combined Residency
There is a possibility for an artist-in residence to do a mixed residency, dedicating a part of their residency to create a project with the children of the village, or offering them workshops sharing their world with them.
The residency is only suited for independent, self-organized individuals. The residents should be comfortable with working, living and driving in a rural mountainous setting.
Practical Conditions
Besides a fully equipped ceramics studio, REON’s space offers basic accommodation, which consists of a guest room with two single beds, a desk and an ensuite bathroom, plus a living space including a kitchenette, a laundry machine, a sofa-bed, and another bathroom.
Depending on the period it can happen that you will mostly use the space on your own but it is possible that you would share the ceramics studio and living space with our team who works in the studio. Applicants are encouraged to specify their needs and expectations in the application.
You can also find a few apartments/villas in the proximate area if that is something suitable for you.
There is a satellite internet connection activated during the months needed, and a water collector ensuring there is water during the often summer interruptions. In general, water should be used with sensitivity, especially during summertime.
Renting a vehicle at your own cost (or shared with another artist) is necessary as the studio is located in a village without direct connection to public transportation and moving solely by foot or bicycle is not viable.
Many small beautiful settlements and beaches are located in the surrounding area. In the closest village ‘Sinies’ which is about a 10’ drive, you can find a mini-market, a bakery, a coffee shop etc. In 20’ you can reach Kassiopi which is a bigger and more touristic settlement with a big supermarket, plently of restaurants etc. The distance from Corfu town and the airport is approximatelly 60’ by car. (Location)
There is a possibility for a duo of artists or a (small) collective to apply. From our personal experience, we have realized that a parallel residency of two compatible residents might be fruitful and practical, since residents are able to share time and experiences together, as well as occuring costs. (eg. renting of a vehicle)
A donation based reimbursement of utility, internet & material costs is highly appreciated but not necessary, depending on the artist’s condition.
